Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) was founded on June 21, 1888 by Monsignor Mariano Casanova, Archbishop of Santiago. With 124 years of excellence and tradition, the university is placed among the 250 best universities in the world and second at a regional level according QS ranking; it receives the highest number of university applicants among Chilean universities. Today the university has an enrollment of more than 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 4,000 postgraduate students, an academic staff of more than 3,000 teachers and researchers, 18 faculties, and 3 College Programmes. UC has 89 undergraduate programmes, 84 Master's programmes, 59 medical specialties, and 31 PhD programmes taught in four campuses located in Santiago, and one in Villarrica, located to the south part of Chile.

The Faculty of Agronomy and Forestry has as a mission to train quality professionals and contribute to the sustainable development of the agri-food, forestry and environmental conservation sectors, in accordance with the principles and values of UC. To this end, the Faculty dictates two professional careers (Agronomy and Forestry Engineering), five Master's programs and a Doctorate program, and develops numerous research projects. The Faculty has a solid body of professors with postgraduate training in recognized International and National Universities, and is consistently ranked among the best in Chile and Latin America.

Part of the faculty of Agronomy and Forestry, the Department of Fruit and Oenology specializes in the study of fruit production, viticulture and oenology. Their research and teaching is focused on the study of the vine, including the production processes of table grapes; winemaking; fruit trees; pest management practices; diseases; fertilization; genetic improvement and irrigation for different fruit species. This specialty seeks that students are able to face a problem of fruit production, either from its plantation to its post harvest, giving them the criteria and tools so that they can make a critical analysis of the situation and propose a solution.
