Universidade de Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro

The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) was established in 1986 in Vila Real, representing the culmination of a process for the installation of higher education in the interior North of Portugal, initiated in 1973 with the Polytechnic Institute of Vila Real, followed by, in 1979, the University Institute of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. UTAD is a high-level institution, dedicated to the creation, transmission and diffusion of culture, knowledge and science. Situated in a developing region, it promotes entrepreneurship in a close relationship with the community, its bodies, institutions and the world of business, deepens scientific knowledge, develops technology and seeks to respond to global, national and regional problems. It has modern facilities, libraries, laboratories, online services and sports facilities, and offers many opportunities in the cultural field that are accessible to its students, teachers and researchers and to other workers, as well as to the community at large. Its Social Services are known for their excellence, providing access to scholarships, modern university residences, canteens, restaurants, computer rooms and support in the areas of medicine, psychology and nutrition. In order to fulfill its mission, UTAD is organized into different teaching schools:

  • School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (ECAV)
  • School of Human and Social Sciences (ECHS)
  • School of Sciences and Technology (ECT)
  • School of Life and Environmental Sciences (ECVA)
  • School of Nursing (ESEnfVR).

Also, it includes eight research centres, which are important for creation and diffusion of science, technology, innovation and culture: Animal and Veterinary Science Centre (CECAV); Centre of Studies and Research on Security and Defense of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (CEISDTAD); Humanities Research Centre (CEL); Centre for Transdisciplinary Development Studies (CETRAD); Research Centre for Sport, Health and Human Development (CIDESD); Research Centre on Agri-Environmental and Biological Technologies (CITAB); Research Centre of Mathematics (CM) and the Chemistry Centre (CQ).

With the exception of ESEnfVR, all these teaching and research structures are based within a campus with 120 ha in Vila Real, housing a Botanical Garden of UTAD, one of the largest in Europe, with a collection that amounts to about 1000 plant species.

The School of Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences (ECAV) integrate of four departments: Agronomy (including viticulture); Forest Science and Landscape Architecture; Veterinary Sciences; and Animal Husbandry. As a whole, the School is responsible for an educational provision that covers a wide range of courses, at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels.

Equipped with a qualified faculty, most of the School’s teachers engage in research at the Centre for Research and Agro-environmental and Biological Technologies (CITAB) and the Centre for Animal and Veterinary Science (CECAV), both based at UTAD, where they undertake scientific work of great national and international prestige. Some of the teachers of the School work in other UTAD centres and in other universities, depending on the nature and specifics of the research in which they are involved.
